In 2020, New Mexico established the Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD) with a mission to create a more cohesive, equitable, and effective early childhood system in the state. In 2022, voters passed a state constitutional amendment that directs an additional $250 million to children and youth, $150 million of which is allocated directly to the ECECD to expand access to child care and preschool.
